What is Rempah?
Rempah is the Indonesian word for spices. But it’s more than that. It’s a fragrant, powerful blend of spices like clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, galangal, turmeric, cumin, coriander, candlenut, star anise, finger root, pandan leaves, kaffir lime, tamarind, lemongrass and much more. Every family has their own mix variations, traditions, and set combinations. Rempah is not a fixed recipe, it’s a feeling. Of home. Of memories. Of love passed down through generations.

Our cuisine, a fusion of Indonesian flavors and Dutch influence, would not exist without rempah. It’s the base that brings depth to stews, soups, sweets, rice tables, sambals, and even drinks.

Growing up, our grandmother’s cabinet was filled with jars, not always carefully labeled and never used by the book. You’d smell, taste, mix, adjust. Cooking wasn’t about rules. It was about intuition.

As founders of Bandoeng’22, we come from an Indo heritage. Our upbringing, memories, and taste palette are steeped in the culture of rempah.
When we began developing our pandan liqueur in 2017, we knew one thing for sure: this wouldn’t be just another flavored drink. It had to be a tribute to our roots.

That’s why we selected a number of traditional spices from our Indo kitchen — our own rempah — and infused them into the recipe for Bandoeng’22 Pandan Liqueur.
Pandan is the green soul of this liqueur, but it’s the subtle layers of spice that give it warmth, depth, and personality. Just like grandma’s cooking.
