Pandan and the story behind Bandoeng’22 to Bulgaria

Sofia, here we come! From October 1st to 3rd, Bandoeng’22 will be joining Liquid Market Sofia, one of Bulgaria’s most exciting festivals for cocktails, spirits and contemporary drinks culture. Together with our Bulgarian importer and distribution partner Drinks Plus, we will be introducing Bandoeng’22 Pandan Liqueur to consumers, bartenders and drinks professionals from across Bulgaria and beyond. Three days to taste pandan, discover it in cocktails and dive deeper into the flavors and stories that inspired Bandoeng’22.

Discovering pandan at Liquid Market

Liquid Market brings together bars, bartenders, spirits brands and drinks enthusiasts for three days of cocktails, tastings, masterclasses, food, music and new discoveries. For Bandoeng’22, it is exactly the kind of place where we like to be: surrounded by people who are curious about new flavors and interested in the stories behind what they drink.

At our stand, visitors will be able to discover Bandoeng’22 Pandan Liqueur neat and experience its aromatic character firsthand. A bartender will also be mixing a selection of pandan cocktails throughout the festival, showing how this distinctive Southeast Asian ingredient can work behind the bar.

From its floral and vanilla-like aromas to its soft, nutty character, pandan offers bartenders a flavor that is both approachable and surprisingly versatile.

Masterclass Beyond Pandan

But bringing Bandoeng’22 to Sofia is about more than pouring drinks. During Liquid Market, Bandoeng’22 co-founder and product owner Marc Pieplenbosch will host a special masterclass:

Beyond Pandan. Discovering the flavors, spices & stories behind Bandoeng’22

The presentation takes pandan as its starting point, but goes much further. Marc will explore the role of pandan in Southeast Asian food culture, the idea of rempah, the spices and aromatics that create layers of flavor in Indonesian cooking and how these influences eventually found their way into Bandoeng’22.

It is also the story of a Dutch liqueur brand with Indonesian roots: why Bandoeng’22 was created, how heritage and contemporary cocktail culture come together, and why we believe there are still so many flavors from Indonesia waiting to be discovered by bartenders and consumers around the world.

Meeting the Bulgarian bar community

Throughout the festival, Marc will also be present at the Bandoeng’22 stand together with the Drinks Plus team. For us, these conversations are an important part of introducing Bandoeng’22 to a new market. Tasting a product is one thing. Meeting the people behind it, understanding where its flavors come from and exchanging ideas about how it can be used is another.

We look forward to meeting Bulgarian bartenders, cocktail enthusiasts and curious drinkers, hearing their ideas and, of course, seeing what they create with pandan.

Growing Bandoeng’22 internationally

Our participation in Liquid Market Sofia is another step in the international journey of Bandoeng’22. What started in the Netherlands with one idea, bringing the distinctive flavor of pandan into the world of contemporary drinks, is gradually finding its way into bars, restaurants and shops around the world.

Working together with local partners such as Drinks Plus allows us to build those markets personally: meeting bartenders, sharing knowledge, creating drinks together and letting people experience the flavor for themselves. And that is exactly what we will be doing in Sofia.
